Ruby

Ruby, Alaska was the first deployment of a 5 kW Low Flow turbine, and the first deployment in an uncontrolled river environment, in this case the Yukon River. It was also the first hydrokinetic system to supply power to an existing micro grid in the United States. With occasional pieces of debris in the river, the installation also included an A-frame assembly to deflect surface debris and prevent interference with the turbine. The system demonstrated the ability to generate power in low-flow water conditions, estimated to be 1.25 m/s, and is designed to manage higher flow speeds with higher power outputs. The first deployment occured in 2008 for one month and briefly redeployed in 2009 and 2010 (a 5 kW New Energy EnCurrent turbine).
